French Macaroons

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 1:27 AM
Hello everyone. I really want to make French macaroons and I was wondering if anyone here has ever made them before? Are they hard to make? Also what recipe did you use? Thanks in advance!

Food clubs?

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
I'm starting to think of the holiday season and was planning on giving my boyfriend (a 1L) a coffee-themed gift.

Does anyone belong to any monthly coffee clubs? The kind of thing where you sign up and they send you a different kind of coffee each month? Or something similar- maybe with fresh fruits and veggies? I've never subscribed to one or known anyone who has. Thoughts, suggestions? Any specific companies that are better than others?

Car (lack of) Service, Travel Mug Lid

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 6:06 PM
1. I was treated so poorly at my local dealership's service area, I want to write a letter to the head of the company and one to the head of the dealership and let them know just how angry and disappointed I am. I doubt this will elicit any response from either, but should I ask for my money back since A) they did not diagnose my problem correctly (which is what I paid for and why I took it there instead of to my trusted mechanic who is handling it now) and B) they were so unprofessional?

1a. If they don't give me anything in return for my angry letters, can I dispute the charges with my credit card company since I didn't really receive the services I paid for? I am absolutely livid and feel I was unfairly charged but don't know the details of how it works for something intangible like service...

2. I have a travel mug from Starbucks I use 5x a week for my instant breakfast drink. It has a weird twist top mechanism that does not come apart. What is the best way to clean the lid? I have googled and found nothing and it's frustrating (and gross). What I'm doing now is boiling some soapy water in a cup in the microwave and then soaking it to get the milk-gunk out as best I can. Halp?

money management help.

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 5:54 PM
Okay -- I have the worse budgeting abilities in the world. The only time I was even mildly okay at it was 3 yrs ago, when I used MS Money to track my spending every week. It really helped me because I set it to a 3 yr charting thing, where it showed how my shitting habits NOW would fuck me hard in the long run, and then kept showing me that every week, until I gradually began improving.

I was hoping to get another copy of MS Money but of course they no longer make it.

What software do you use to manage your finances?

Coconut cake

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 1:54 PM
I'm looking for a recipe for coconut cake that only uses coconut milk, not flaked coconut. I want to make a soft white cake that is just scented with coconut. I plan to top with whipped cream with just a hint of orange flower water, and toasted almond slivers. Any recipes would be much appreciated, or if any improvisational bakers have advice about substituting coconut milk in cake recipes, that would be great too!

Dutch Oven Advice

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 3:44 PM
I went camping last weekend and me and my Pathfinders got the chance to make peach cobbler in a dutch oven over the fire, and we had an amazing time and it was absolutely delicious. Now I want to get one myself both for indoor and outdoor use, but I have no idea where to start in buying one! Does anyone here have one? Do you have any recommendation on the best brand and style to get?

Thanks :)

Great things about the Swell Season show on Monday night:

-Sold out
-Glen in good mood
-Glen in jaunty hat
-Relaxed, cool Marketa
-Everyone played well save for a few minor mishaps that were generally laughed off
-Good setlist
-Mostly well-behaved crowd

Bad things:

-Annoying shouty guy during show (though I suppose annoying shouty guy is more or less a staple of Glen shows)
-9:30 Club overcrowded
-Surrounded by pushy girls
-Too many Twilight fans
-Hipsters in scarves
-Lighting a bit dim

The diagnosis...

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 4:43 PM
I posted this a few days ago asking about mysterious itching.

Well, after a doctor's visit, it has been determined that it is scabies. After doing some research it doesn't seem like too bad a thing unless it's not treated, but now we start the treatment and we have to wash everything and spray down surfaces.

So since quite a few of you know the situation might have been in one like that at one point, what products do you recommend besides the medication that help with getting rid of these things? Bug Spray? Special Detergent?

Thanks!

For those of you not on Ally's friends list, The African Well Fund's current auction is now underway on eBay. It'll be running through this upcoming Monday. Featured items include a copy of On the Move signed by Bono and Adam, a Music Rising catalog signed by Edge, a Glen-and-Mar signed copy of the new Swell Season CD, Strict Joy, a water bottle from Weezer, stuff by Anti-Flag, etc, etc. There are also a lot of really beautiful textiles, jewelry, and woven items as well. So if any of this strikes your fancy and you've got some extra cash, head on over. If you don't have extra cash, tell a friend!

The money raised will fund AWF projects that help bring safe drinking water to thousands of Africans.

Hello Hipsters!

A while back I bought a shower curtain that I absolutely love. However, I did not realize it's 100% Polyester and that it is Dry Clean Only. The shower curtain has these smudges/stains that I am sure is from conditioner/shampoo/soap residue. Even if it's Dry Clean Only, can I just throw it in the washer and then hang dry? Or do I have to spot treat it.

If need be, I can take a picture of the spots so you can see.

I just went to retrive my Diet Coke from the fridge and it's gone. But: There's a Diet Cherry Coke in there that does not belong to me. Did someone steal my Diet Coke? Or did some other soda drinker accidentally grab the wrong one?

Miss Army Kit

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Catching up on some old posts, I followed a link to the Miss Army Kit and Im currently obsessed. I want one..and I want one bad. However reading the reviews, it seems cheap and breakable.

Does anyone have a good solution or product that keeps all the little things together in your purse? I love that the Miss Army Kit has a compartment to stick a few tylenol, some tweezers, a mirror..all in one.

I guess my issue is that I hate carrying a big purse...but I like to carry a lot of stuff. So Im in a pickle. I try to buy small things. But by the time I get my keys, ipod, chapstick, hand cream, wallet, cell phone, emergency snack, tylenol, etc etc etc I feel like Im carrying a backpack. Any creative ideas?

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Bread question

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
I have an excellent, simple bread recipe that I use for all of my bread making needs, however today while my (poor tortured) son was eating a piece, he complained about the texture. It IS a very dense bread and quite frankly I'd like it to be a bit airier, if possible. Any ideas what I could do with it to make it a bit lighter?
The recipe is basic:
3 tsp of yeast
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 c milk
2 tbs butter
5-6 c flour

I always kneed, let it rise about 30 minutes, punch it down, put it in the pans and let it rise again before baking. Would an extra rise in the bowl help?

Thanks :)
